You know what a red herring is right? If not, review your Mystery Terms handout first. Afterwards, write some ideas you have about some of the possible red herrings that you think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote into The Hound of the Baskervilles.
i guess i kinda have the first post because zack and kurts posts were deleted so: woot woot (kinda) anyways, i definitely think that the Barrymores are red harrings. everything they do points to them murdering, their sinister attitudes, the fact that Barrymore lied about tracks at the scene, the fact that they got a large sum of money in the will, ect. I think that the actual murderer is Roger baskerville (the supposedly "dead" brother of sir charles). im jus sayin that so that no one else can claim it as their idea.
Okay well I think that the barrymore/s are red herrings as well. they have several clues pointing to the, and a 'sinister' description too. they have the means, motives, and opportunity! but they probably are up to something else completely unrelated. the author wouldnt make the culprit that obvious. Jack: my idea. Exactly my idea. He totally faked his death and he's the bearded guy who showed up to the house. I dont know why he did it; maybe he wants inheritance (thought its pretty hard to inherit once youre fake-dead.) Or he could be seeking revenge on his family.
I have to agree with Jack and Val that Barrymore is a red Herring. I think that he is just there to completely confuse the readers. Vals right the author would not make it that obvious that the Barrymores are the culprits. Personally I think that Jack is the murderer. He does have a couple of clues pointing to him but not so many to make him a red herring. Also if Barrymore was the murderer in the characters list it would not have said that he was sinister because that would be kind of weird if you basically knew the culprit the whole entire story.
Hey char here, I also agree with Val, Jack, and ChriisBo. I think that the Barrymoore family is a big red hering because the author makes it way to obvious in the beginging of the book.I mean all the clues and stories that lead the murder to that family get revealed too early in the story. And usually in good mystery films and TV shows you really don't piece all the evidence together that early and that fast.
I wouldn't count the Barrymoores out quite yet. They may not be the ones that actually commited the murder, but they might be somewhat related to Sir Hugos death. Also remember that Sherlock Holmes recieved a response when he repeated what Barrymoore did.
I believe that a possible Red Herring could be Jack because with his personality he would make a classic murderer. Jack is only mad at Sir Henry because Sir Henry likes his sister, so why would Jack want to murder Sir Hugo if Sir Hugo had nothing to do with Sir Henry liking Jack's sister?
i also agree w/Jack, Val, Chris Bo, and Char. i think that the Barryomores are red herrings. mr. Barrymore was switching the flashlight on and off as a signal to something on the moor. then he was interrupted and he puts it away. when sherlock holmes tries it, it signals the hound. if barrymore knew how to signal the hound, then he could have signaled it to kill sir. charles. the barrymores could be the suspect but i think that they are redherrings because if they were suspects, it would be to obvious.
Overall, the Barrymores are red herring which kind of was following what everyone else said. Everything about them speaks the suspect. Of course, now we know that the signaling of the light was for Seldon. Also, from other books and mystery movies, it seems like all the butlers are sort of sinister and mean. Now they're leaving too. I have to agree with Alex that Jack might be a red herring. His love for zoology (coincidence to there being a "hound")and hatred for Sir Charles makes him look like a suspect. Finally, I don't think the "dead" Roger is the murderer because what would be his motive or hope or achievement from killing Sir Charles? It seems too weird or crazy of an idea. Why would he fake his own death? If he wanted to kill Sir Charles then he would've done it earlier.
he faked his death to make sure he wouldnt be suspected. He wouldnt of killed him earlier because it would have been obvious. He was the "Black sheep" remember? He would immediatly be suspected. He would kill him because he was mistreated by his family. Also i think that it is mr. franklin now. Mr. k. gave us a hint when he told us to remember that he had a beard (the man who came in at night was beared, remember?). His motive is that Sir charles was secretely seeing his daughter "L.L."
i agree with jorge i think that barrymoore was a red herring with the flashlight but he was already kinda cleared becuase holmes siad he had meet the brother and the storys matched
Watson is being an unintentional red herring, and here's why: He is supporting the belief of the spectral hound, even though it is likely a tool of the murderer. (E.G. a normal german shepherd or something like that - an attack dog - that seems scarier with the reputation of the Hound of the Baskervilles) Watson thinks that it is a real dog doing the killing, and supports that Idea, but in my opinion it's the owner of the hound that's setting the dog on Sir Henry.
i also agree with jorge about barrymore, but i am still a little doubtful that hes a red herring. he could be the culpret. i mean come on, i wouldn't believe that garbage that he told sir henry about the flashlight. i do believe the jail person is his bro. though. but i mean come on. if he does happen to be a red herring though, it definatley fooled me
dont think i think the people who believe he is a red herring are dumb. thats the most obviuos so i think ur prediction has a large chance of being true
before i read the part about barrymoore, i too thought he was a red herring. also though, i think the recent note that says "get out if you value your life" signed lady agatha is a red herring. its just to obvious to be real... unless dat is wat they want us to think... or maybe they want us to think that while really they make her the criminal but really barrymoore is the REAL criminal! :)
i agree with pauli and everyone else who thought that the barrymores were red herrings. I think that barrymore is a red herring but also that Lady agatha is a red herring too. But idk i mean the letter was rly creepy and so she might b on to something..
You never know. Thought red herrings can be the real trail.
That's why we need to finish up the story before we can do too much work on the 180 boxes.
I don't think that Barrymore is a red herring. Think...
"Oh, I'll make it obvious. That way they'll think he will be the culprit. But...that'll make them think that I'm trying to fool them, and make them believe that it's NOT the culprit. But then they'll think I did that on purpose, which will lead them to think that Barrymore IS the culprit...and it'll keep on going around like that..."
Yeah...
Anyone agree with me? Basically, red herrings can go around in a circle as being them and not being them.
I think the actual note itself that was slipped under the kitchen to Sir Henry was not a red herring. I think that Lady Agatha's signature is. I also believe that the guy with the beard who appeared at the window was the escaped convict because remeber that the Barrymores had said that they had brought the convict to their house in order to feed him.
I believed that the barrymores were a HUGE red herring, but when i saw barrymore shining the light on the moor, I am now not sure who it is. I also think someone may OWN the hound as a pet, probably Kathy Stapleton because she is afraid of nothing.
When Barrymore was using the flashlight it was only for Seldon and the sound was just a coincidence. When the French Doors were opening IO think that it was only Seldon trying to slip in for some food.
Laura Lyons is not finished she has more to tell she seems to smart and capable and most of all she seems scared. She knows the secret and she can't tell for the saftey of her life. She should tell before Henry pays the price for her tight lip.
Fraklin seems like a Red Hearing and is only grumpy because he has had a tough life he seems like he is getting a bad rap. Lady Agatha's message must be innocent because she is the one who called Holmes in the first place why do that if she is more likely to caught with Holmes around. I think she was also threatened with her life. Let wait and see.
